...Boat Fire @ Clifford
Pier - 28th August 2005
I had just finished conducting one
of my photography coaching sessions for lesson 2 of my 8th intake photography
course.
Was actually heading back home by bus...Did not drive today as parking on
Sundays around Esplanade area is really like a
game of treasure hunt. Was walking alongside Esplanade when the sea-breeze
passed me with a tinge of burned timber.
Campfire at 6.00pm in town?...I said to myself. Looking out to the direction of
Clifford-Pier, to my surprise, one of the river
cruise "Chinese Junk" was hidden behind a screen of smoke....A fire? Initially I
ignored it as people around were just doing
their own stuff - not showing any signs of curiosity...
I walked towards the bus-stop outside Clifford Pier and as I got near the Jetty,
I could then clearly see what's actually
happening - the "Chinese Junk" was indeed on fire. Here are some shots that I
took when i got closer to the scene.....
|
..this was shot from the corner of One
Fullerton....right by the cafe. As you can see here, the little orange dot
of the Fireman's Helmet.... They wer spraying water towards the boat.
|
 |
..trying to get a closer shot -
|
...this looks like a serious case. The Fireman is
donning their respiratory suite. Looks like its could be an internal
engine room type of fire. Fortunately the fire actually broke out
while the boat is alongside the pier.
|
 |
...went in closer.....
|
...as i approached Clifford Pier, I tried to
catch this "cool" looking fireman stepping out of the pier towards one of
the fire engines. Behind him is the oxygen tank - looks like he just
got out of the burning boat. Although, he's exhausted, he still keep his
"all ready" look.
out on the main-road...is a row of fire-engine and this fireman is
coordinating the water pump trucks to ensure proper water supply to those
at the fire scene - their lives surely depend greatly on him!!.
|
  |
...looking behind me...
|
...here as you can see the row of fire trucks
lines up along the main road...all ready for any event of further
danger.....
|
 |
...snaking around...
|
..I was greeted by a long fire hose laid on the
floor feeding water to the fire scene....Maybe its Sunday...and not many
public around that area. Only a few curious passer by like me came up to
the police line to watch. There were a couple other photographers
along the police line. There were a handful of sailors hanging
around wondering what actually happened too....just like me....heheheh....
I took the opportunity to snap some shots of the fireman in action as they
stepped into their fire resistant suites and respirators.
|
 |
...running to and fro....
|
...I'm not sure what this device is for boot
surely looks like some ventilator system to be used in the scene to help
suck out the smoke from the smoky insides of the boat....Its no joke
running around in their fire-suit and the large helmet...I have to salute
these guys......this looks like one of the fireman who have just completed
their turn going into the burning boat.....I kinda like the looks and
bright color of their fire suite...I can see the fatigue in their faces as
they appear out of the smoke with their face wet with perspiration.
|
  |
...taking turns.....
|
...tired and exhausted I suppose ..as seen by the
facial expression of one of the fireman as he walked away to take a rest
after his rounds....Its really great to see the great coordination in this
chaotic situation......all taking turns in a systematic manner.
|
  |
...as they stepped out.....
|
......walking tall with his fire suit, one of the
fireman leaving the main fire scene to get back to other tasks out on the
fire trucks.....
|
 |
....shopping cart?......
|
...staying alive in the smoke....these guys
outside used trolleys to transport oxygen tanks .....as the empty ones get
replenished outside on the fire-trucks.
The cycle goes on and on
....and on..
|
  |
.....as one steps out ...
|
...The team work in a rotation manner as you can
roughly see in the second photo on the right - they are squatting down
waiting in a queue to enter the boat.
|
  |
.....haha...no crowd.......
|
...Nobody is around....my watch tells me its
6.15pm....No local public could be seen along the police line.....This is
a wide angle shot of the scene. By now most of smoke seem to be
cleared which mean that the fire should have been put-out out....
Bravo-Bravo!!
|
 |
...life line.......
|
...this linkage for the fire hose must have
experienced many such fire scenes I suppose. It still bear the traditional
well proven "T" headed hose connector!!! My mobile phone rang right after
I took this photo. My wife who was expecting me to be home by
6pm.....wondered why wasn't I home yet.....haha...i told her what happened
and she was surprised...!!! By then, looks like everything was already
over as the fireman were now slowing down in their urgency....I guess
everything is over and I decided to head back...
|
 |
...last piece....
|
....I remembered when I was younger when ladders
and axe.....are normally associated to firemans.....In fact they still are
now......Passed by two fireman together carrying a ladder. Right
before this, there were two fireman were seen carry a super long
axe.....about 1.5 metres lond from its handle end.....probably for a good
power swing.....
Right after this....i packed my camera and headed home....and shared the
photos with my wife when I reached home...
|
 |
......a dramatic event to watch indeed. Hope you
enjoy the photos capturing the hard and tough life of our local "BOMBA".
"BOMBA" is the malay word for Fire Brigade......Once again thanks for viewing &
reading this short account.....
rgds,
sulhan.....
